Congratulations to CIMVHR on Forum 2016

(Mr. James Baylis accepting the Sir Frederick Banting Award on behalf of Dr. Kastrup)

This past November the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) held their 7thannual Forum in Vancouver, British Columbia. As a presenting sponsor of Forum 2016: From Science to Service, True Patriot Love (TPL) is proud to support Canada’s academic community involved in military, Veteran and family health research. TPL understands that the commitment to military personnel, Veterans and their families includes a responsibility to be cutting edge, innovative and forward thinking when addressing the current and future health care needs of this population.

In the past year, CIMVHR partnerships have grown to include 42 university members and 7 global affiliates. Resulting in the depth of research presented at Forum expanding from across Canada to around the world. Forum 2016 had many noteworthy highlights, including an inspiring keynote address delivered by Captain (Retired) Trevor Greene and neuroscientist Dr. Ryan D’Arcy – Beyond Possibilities: From Iron Soldier to Veterans Village*.  With 175 presentations over the three-day event, the vast scope of research, which is currently being conducted across the country and around the world, was evident. Updates on programs such as the COPE Program, Strongest Families distance coaching for children with anxiety and behavioral diagnoses, service dogs for Veterans with PTSD, understanding the needs of military families and advances in limb prosthesis are only a small sample of the exchange of knowledge and conversations that occurred throughout Forum.

As sponsor of the 2016 Sir Frederick Banting Award, TPL extends sincere congratulations to Christian Kastrup from the University of British Columbia for recognition of his research “Self-propelling Particles that Stop Severe Haemorrhage in Swine by Transporting Tranexamic Acid and Thrombin Through Flowing Blood”.

Forum 2017 will be held in Toronto, ON from September 25-27, 2017 during the Invictus Games.

Invictus Games Announces International Study in collaboration with CIMVHR

Invictus Games Toronto 2017 CEO, Michael Burns

On November 22, 2016, the Invictus Games Toronto 2017 announced that they will fund an independent research study on the impact of adaptive sporting events on the rehabilitation of ill, wounded and injured veterans, service members and their families. The study will take the form of a post-doctorate thesis by Dalhousie University and Canadian Institute for Military & Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) researcher Celina Shirazipour, and will follow competitors and their families in the upcoming Invictus Games.

This international study will be the first of its kind. Findings will be crucial for providing a platform for evidence-based policy-making to support the further development of sport programs and events delivered to military personnel and veterans with illnesses and injuries in Canada and internationally.

“By funding this study, one of the potential outcomes will be to demonstrate that the Invictus Games are more than just another sporting event; that they are a means of helping competitors overcome mental and physical injuries sustained as a result of their service,” said Michael Burns, Chief Executive Officer, Invictus Games Toronto 2017 Organizing Committee.

Preliminary study findings will be presented at next year’s CIMVHR Forum, which will be held in Toronto in September during the Games.

True Patriot Love Scotiabank Expedition: BEST OF CANADA

True Patriot Love (TPL) is thrilled to announce the next adventure in our expedition series – True Patriot Love Scotiabank Expedition: BEST OF CANADA. In honour of Canada 150, True Patriot Love has chosen to celebrate the varied landscape of our great nation by exploring three remote locations. Taking place in the Summer of 2017, BEST OF CANADA will challenge ill and injured soldiers and Canadian business leaders to take on some of the most unique adventures from coast to coast to coast. Whether it’s rafting in Central BC, canoeing in the Northwest Territories or kayaking the shores of Newfoundland, each expedition provides its own set of challenges.

Building on the success of TPL's previous expeditions to the Himalayas (2012), the North Pole (2014) and Antarctica (2016), BEST OF CANADA aims to bring together a team of currently serving members or Veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces with business and community leaders to take on unique physical challenges together. Working as a team to complete a mission, participants will face physical, emotional, and mental roadblocks over a two-week period. By doing so, these individuals will step outside of their comfort zone and become a team.

In addition to reaching their physical goal, the expedition team will collectively raise critical funds and build awareness for the brave Veterans of our Canadian Armed Forces and their families.

While fundraising is an important feature of the expedition series, the expeditions also provide an opportunity for participating soldier team members to face personal challenges on their journey of transition into civilian life. Many soldier team members are dealing with visible and invisible injuries as a result of their service, and this experience will provide them the opportunity to share their stories, bond with other participants, and transition into a fulfilling civilian role following service.

True Patriot Love Returns to Vimy in 2017

2017 will not only mark Canada’s 150th birthday but also the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge - an important event in our country’s military history. In 1917, Canadian troops were victorious in this famed battle which was a critical triumph in the eventual success of WWI and a defining moment for the Canadian military.

In June of 2017, True Patriot Love will travel to the battle sites and memorials of WWI and WWII in northern France to pay tribute to the fallen who have sacrificed so much. Individuals who have made this trip in the past often refer to it as a ‘pilgrimage’ because it’s a journey of special significance for Canadians. We will be guided through defining moments for our nation by Dr. Terry Copp, renowned military historian at Wilfrid Laurier University and special guest General (ret'd) Rick Hillier, former Chief of Defence Staff for the Canadian Armed Forces.

If you are interested in joining this incredible experience in 2017, please contact Kristina Schreiber, Director of Expeditions and Events for the True Patriot Love Foundation (kschreiber@truepatriotlove.com). Spaces on this trip are very limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis.
