Supporting Our Military Families

This month, in recognition of Family Day, we are taking the time to celebrate those special relationships that mean so much to us.

At True Patriot Love, supporting military families is at the heart of what we do. Little is known about military caregivers–those who care for our ill and injured military personnel and Veterans. These caregivers, who are usually family members, play an essential role by improving the quality of life for our ill and injured population, supporting rehabilitation and enabling quicker recovery. However, being a caregiver can lead to fatigue and burnout, and result in financial strains if the caregiver is unable to work outside the home full-time.

True Patriot Love recognizes the important role of the family in the journey of recovery and that’s why we fund programs like CADS Winter Sports ClinicOperation: Care for the Caregiver, and why we are proud to partner with initiatives like C150 Global Odyssey that will help finance critical programs for our military families. In this newsletter, you will learn more about these programs, the people behind them and information on how to get involved.

Here are some inspirational stories from the month of February that we are pleased to share with you. From our family to yours, thank you for your continued support.

CADS WSC: Rehabilitation through Winter Sport

The Canadian Association of Disabled Skiing-National Capital Division (CADS-NCD) hit the slopes in Calabogie Peaks earlier this month in support of ill and injured military personnel and Veterans. Now in its 7th year, the Canadian Association of Disabled Skiing Winter Sports Clinic (CADS WSC) aims to help service men and women overcome their mental and physical injuries through winter sports. By teaching participants how to ski and snowboard, CADS WSC inspires those with illnesses and injuries to face their challenges head on.

This unique program promotes family healing by allowing spouses and children to participate in the clinic as well, making it a family affair. This year the program saw increased participation with 28 military and Veterans and 9 spouses in attendance for the 5-day clinic. Since 2011, TPL has provided over $132,000 to CADS-NCD for families to participate in the program.

On behalf of TPL we want to congratulate CADS-NCD on another successful Winter Sports Clinic! For more information and ways to get involved please visit the CADS-NCD official site.

MFRC-PEI Operation: Care for the Caregiver

This month the Prince Edward Island-Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC-PEI) released their webinar series, Operation: Care for the Caregiver, an initiative funded by the Bell True Patriot Love Fund. This webinar series provides insight into the challenges spouses of military members and Veterans face as well as the help available to them and their families. Throughout the webinars, participants meet many inspiring individuals, each having one thing in common–someone they care for served our country. The series takes listeners on a journey to better understand what having a spouse in the military entails and the impact for the people left behind.

Operation: Care for the Caregiver has already been watched by 300 people across Canada. In case you missed it, you can watch the broadcasts here.

Canadian Father-Son Team Take Flight July 1st!

(Bob Dengler visiting the Bell Helicopter Plant, 2017)

C150 Global Odyssey (C150GO) is sure to capture the attention of Canadians across the country this summer! In celebration of Canada 150, father and son team Bob and Steven Dengler, will take off from Ottawa on July 1st to circumnavigate the globe by helicopter. This first ever father-son circumnavigation will raise funds for True Patriot Love.

Bob and Steven Dengler and their co-pilot Rob MacDuff plan to fly a Canadian-made Bell 429 Global Ranger helicopter over 37,000 km in just over a month. This team will visit every Canadian provincial and territorial capital, while also visiting various international landmarks.

This historic milestone in Canadian aviation has been years in the making and we’re excited to follow Bob, Steven and Rob on their journey as they travel across the world for Canada’s sesquicentennial.

BEST OF CANADA Expedition Series: Parent/Youth Teams Needed

In honour of Canada 150, True Patriot Love has chosen to celebrate the varied landscape of our great nation by exploring 3 remote locations. Taking place in the Summer of 2017, BEST OF CANADA will challenge ill and injured soldiers and Canadian business leaders to take on some of the most unique adventures from coast to coast to coast. We are currently seeking committed business and community leaders and their children (ages 16-25 years old) to join us on this incredible journey as part of the expedition civilian teams. Parent/Youth teams will train for the expedition, fundraise together and participate in a mentorship program with the expedition soldier team members.

Join us on one of these incredible adventures and spend some quality time with your son or daughter before they embark on the next phase of their life. This experience will provide them with the opportunity to give back, learn more about Canada’s history, our military and the challenges transitioning Veterans face.

All funds raised will support programs and research that benefit military and Veteran families as they transition to civilian life. For more information please contact Kristina Schreiber.
